The Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace presented the Indonesian President Joko Widodo with an award on Monday in honor of his contributions to international peace efforts.
Launched in 2015, the Imam Al-Hassan bin Ali Award recognizes individuals who have “established a culture of peace and strengthened its importance in Muslim societies.”
At the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday morning, Al-Mahfouz bin Bayyah, the ADFP Secretary-General, presented the award to Widodo.
“This award from Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace is a form of appreciation toward Indonesia’s contribution to international peace,” the Indonesian president tweeted after the meeting.
According to State Secretary Pratikno, the recognition is a “great honor” for both the Indonesian government and its citizens.
“President Joko Widodo has been trusted as a leader who spreads message and culture of peace for the world,” he said.
“Mr. President expressed gratitude for the award and (expects it to) strengthen relations between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, and at the same time give us zest to make the G20 a success for global peace and prosperity.”
This year, the Group of 20 largest economies’ rotating presidency is held by Indonesia, the nation with the greatest proportion of Muslims in the world. The leaders of the group’s member states will gather in Bali the following week for the G20 meeting.
According to Al-Mahfouz, the ADFP has “great hope” that Indonesia will “lead a worldwide initiative (to remove) fear” and promote a culture of harmony” under Widodo’s leadership.
Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the secretary-general of the Muslim World League, who was honored in 2019 for advancing tolerance and peace worldwide, is one of the recipients of the award.
