According to the Student News Network’s Telegram channel, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on Monday intercepted a foreign vessel in the Gulf that was transporting 11 million liters of illegal petroleum.
For the duration of the inquiry and legal proceedings, the captain and crew of the foreign oil ship are being held in custody.
Iran, which has some of the lowest fuel prices in the world as a result of significant government subsidies and the sharp decline in the value of its currency, has been battling widespread petroleum smuggling by land to its neighbors and by sea to Gulf Arab governments.
